UNRESOLVED CRISIS: ASSESSING THE SOCIOECONOMIC IMPACT IMPACT OF PROLONGED DISPLACEMENT DISPLACEMENT DISPLACEMENT ON MARAWI SIEGE SURVIVORS (2017-2022)
This study investigates the unresolved socioeconomic crises experienced by survivors of the 2017 Marawi Siege in the Philippines, whose protracted displacement persists five years after the conflict. Through in-depth interviews and thematic analysis, the research assesses the enduring impacts of prolonged displacement on Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), focusing on their struggles with livelihood loss, housing insecurity, and social fragmentation. It critically examines the interplay between institutional interventions led by government agencies, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), and traditional leaders (Datus) and the lived realities of IDPs, revealing systemic gaps in aid delivery, cultural mismatches in reintegration efforts, and fragmented governance. Participants included Marawi Siege survivors displaced since 2017, alongside policymakers (Bangsamoro Transition Authority Parliament members), LGU representatives, and CSO actors, whose perspectives highlight the dissonance between policy frameworks and grassroots needs. Findings underscore how prolonged displacement exacerbates poverty cycles and erodes community cohesion, framing these outcomes as unresolved crises rooted in inequitable recovery strategies. The study concludes with actionable recommendations for trauma-informed, culturally grounded policies to address structural inequities and foster sustainable reintegration in post-conflict Marawi.
