SIGNIFICANCE OF SEAWEED CULTIVATION ON ECONOMIC STABILITY AND IMPROVING HOUSEHOLD WELFARE IN AMPEKALE VILLAGE
Seaweed cultivation is a strategic sector in the coastal economy, contributing significantly to the income of fishing households. In Ampekale Village, this potential has not been fully utilized due to structural challenges such as limited access to technology, market price volatility, and minimal institutional support. This study aims to analyze the significance of seaweed cultivation on the economic stability and welfare of coastal households. The method used was a descriptive-quantitative approach based on a survey of 75 seaweed farming households, complemented by linear regression analysis and simulations of value chain strengthening scenarios. The results indicate that income from seaweed cultivation contributes 62.4% to total household income, with a positive correlation to education and health expenditures. Simulations indicate that technology-based interventions and strengthening cooperatives can increase income by up to 23.7%. The conclusions of this study confirm that seaweed cultivation plays a vital role in supporting family economic stability and strengthening the socio-economic resilience of coastal communities. This implies the need for policies that encourage down streaming, strengthen local institutions, and increase market literacy among farmers.
