CLOUD INFRASTRUCTURE HARDENING: SECURING MULTI-TENANT ENVIRONMENTS IN CRITICAL SECTORS

Abstract

Due to the growing centrality of cloud computing to the functioning of crucial sectors, such as healthcare, finance, and the energy sector, in modern society, the security problem faced in multi-tenancy cloud computing has become even more complicated and pressing. Multi-tenancy is a feature that allows sharing the same cloud infrastructure among several clients to utilize the resources and scale them effectively. Nonetheless, similar architecture presents significant threats as well, such as data leakage, unauthorized access, side-channel vulnerabilities, and configuration vulnerability, and these are especially disastrous in industries with a hugely important role of system integrity and data secrecy. This study explores how the best cloud infrastructure hardening strategies can be deployed to ensure the protection of multi-tenant clouds in high-stakes industries. Using mixed methods, the research finds the shared vulnerabilities in the multi-tenant architectures and assesses the methodologies of hardening, including network segmentation, encryption policy, hypervisor shielding, real-time monitoring, and privileged access. To measure the improvement in security posture, empirical data were extracted from simulated attacks and sector-specific security audits. The results demonstrate that companies that adopted a structured hardening model had their condemnation level considerably decreased and their security levels enhanced by 40 percent on average, as compared to the unhardened organizations. Besides, improved adherence to international cybersecurity standards, including ISO /IEC 27001 and NIST, has been witnessed in the sectors tested. The paper is valuable both to academic research and to practice, as it outlines a sector-aware framework of infrastructure hardening capable of enhancing the cloud system resilience in multi-tenant scenarios. It ends with some policy solutions that can be implemented by cloud service providers, security engineers, and policymakers who have to protect mission-critical infrastructure in the era of ubiquitous digital information.
