Abstract

The Government of India has on 7 September 2005 notified Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act 2005 (MGNREGA) of the key purpose of enhancing the livelihood protection of unskilled labor in rural areas by ensuring the salaries of all households with unqualified manual labour. MGNREGA, one of the government's flagship initiatives, guarantees the unemployed 100 working days a year at an inflation-indexed pay scale for the CPI. As the discretionary income rises owing to the introduction of the system, the quality of life and cost trend of the household protected by the MGNREGA system is projected to experience considerable changes. As the bulk of rural household expenditures protected by this scheme need to be dramatically modified, it is thought that the effect of the scheme on these households needs to be investigated.
