Abstract

Gorontalo is one of the provinces in Indonesia, which is majority sunni Islam. In 1998 after the presence of Wahdah Islamiyah) as part ofa transnational Islamic network, the polemics of Islamic thought began to emerge and color the dynamism persfective of local Islamic Gorontalo. This research aims to uncover the causes of polemic thought among Muslims (Wahdah Islamiyah, Jama'ah Tabligh and NU young activists) and the role of scholars in completing polemic. This research is qualitative research using an ethnographic approach that is narrative. This study found that the cause of polemic Islamic thought in Gorontalo is expressed by four factors, namely ikhtilaf (dissent), blind fanaticism, and claims of truth and master figures. In overcoming these polemics, the cleric countered the discourse of every activity of the science assembly and appealed to organizational groups not to attack each other. The same for the sake of maintaining and maintaining the unity and brotherhood of the Islamic ummah in Gorontalo. Gorontalo scholars emphasize the principles of tawasuth (moderta), tawazun (balance), tasamuh (tolerance) and I'tidal (perpendicular) within the framework of Ahlul Sunnah walJama'ah in the pleimic of Islamic thought in Gorontalo.
