ORGANIC AGRICULTURE PRODUCTION: KNOWLEDGE, ATTITUDE, AND PRACTICES (KAP) OF THE BENEFICIARIES FROM BARANGAY SITOG, KATIPUNAN, ZDN
The coconut industry is a cornerstone of the Philippine economy, employing millions of farmers and providing a major source of income. However, coconut farmers in Zamboanga del Norte face significant challenges, making it essential to explore alternative income sources, such as organic agriculture. The Organic Agriculture Production Extension Project, implemented by the College of Agriculture and Forestry, aimed to enhance knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of coconut farmers in Barangay Sitog regarding organic agriculture. The study utilized a descriptive-correlational research design to evaluate the project’s effectiveness among 64 coconut farmers. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and questionnaires translated into the Cebuano dialect. Results revealed that farmers possessed high levels of knowledge and favorable attitudes towards organic agriculture; however, practical adoption varied. Despite positive attitudes and understanding of organic methods, the translation into consistent practices was hindered by economic challenges, limited access to organic inputs, and logistical barriers. Spearman's Rank Order Correlation showed that educational attainment and income positively influenced knowledge but had minimal impact on practical application. The study concludes that while the project effectively enhanced awareness, further targeted interventions are needed to bridge the gap between knowledge and practice. Recommendations include enhanced hands-on training, resource subsidies, establishing farmer cooperatives, and policy incentives. Emphasis is placed on providing accessible organic farming resources, strengthening farmer networks, and continuous project evaluation. Integrating organic farming into school curricula is also suggested to ensure long-term adoption and community resilience. These measures aim to create a supportive environment that fosters sustainable agricultural practices among coconut farmers.
