Abstract

Technological developments in the era of the industrial revolution 4.0 have a significant influence on people’s social life, especially on the established local cultural identities such as cultural expressions, rituals, and spoken languages. This study is aimed at investigating how the cultural identity of the local Muslim communities adapts to the disruptive changes brought by the Industrial Revolution 4.0 in two major Penginyongan sub-cultures, namely Banyumas and Tegal. With an ethnographic approach, data were collected through interviews, Focus Group Discussion, and participatory observation. The results of this study indicate that the Penginyongan Muslim communities in the two areas are able to adapt to the currents of modernity without having to lose their identity and local cultural values by preserving traditions while adjusting to the changes (cultural modifications). Penginyongan culture as a regional culture is bound by cultural, ethnic, and theological similarities, so it can become a bulwark against the onslaught of modern civilization and technology.
